Mountaineers Foundation Announces Shift of Focus for Community Grant Programs

The Mountaineers Foundation in Bremerton, Washington, has announced a shift in the focus of its Community Grants program. Going forward, the program will work to foster understanding and promote actions designed to inspire conservation within the Salish Sea region, an intricate network of coastal waterways that includes the southwestern portion of the Canadian province of British Columbia and the northwestern portion of the state of Washington. Its major bodies of water are the Strait of Georgia, the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and Puget Sound.

Specifically, the foundation is interested in projects and active programs that preserve and protect environments and living organisms that influence and support the region. To that end, the program offers two levels of grants.

Level 1: Community Conservation Education Grants are limited to no more than $5,000 and are meant to support modest, short-term projects related to conservation education that are consistent with the foundation's mission. The Level 1 grants will be offered once during the calendar year, with an application deadline of April 14, 2017.

Level 2: The Paul Wiseman Conservation Education Grant is limited to no more than $15,000 in support of substantial projects that envision significant environmental education benefits with carefully articulated goals and outcomes. These grants should have high impact or visibility and could span multiple years. The Level 2 grant will be offered once during the calendar year, with an application of October 1, 2017.

Projects may include direct educational programs and materials related to environmental conservation; lectures, conferences, seminars; written or audiovisual awareness materials; and/or curriculum or other instructional materials.

To be eligible for a grant, nonprofit organizations must have 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status. The foundation also will consider libraries and schools.
