Community Foundation Update (08/05/17)

Alabama

The Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham has announced that it is accepting proposals through its second grant cycle of the year. Organizations that provide services in Jefferson, St. Clair, Blount, Shelby, or Walker counties are invited to submit a brief proposal in the areas of building communities that are livable, sustainable, and vibrant, and/or economic security for individuals and families in the region. The deadline to apply is August 25.

Florida

The Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties has announced that it received Palm Awards and Awards of Quality for excellence in public relations from the Public Relations Society of America’s Palm Beach chapter. CFPBMC senior director Corrie Keller also received the 2017 Rising Young Professional Award.

Kansas

The Newton-based Central Kansas Community Foundation has announced the recipients of 2017 Central Kansas Community Foundation Kids FUNd grants, which are funded through the L. Marie Haun Charitable Fund for Children. This year, a total of $30,000 was awarded to fourteen charities providing programs and projects for children and families in the area. Recipients include Kids Need to Eat, Peace Connections, Emberhope, and the Community Playschool.

Michigan

The Kalamazoo Community Foundation has appointed Martha Gonzalez Cortes as its new vice president of community investment. Most recently, Gonzalez Cortes served as community relations director for the state of Michigan. The foundation also announced the appointment of Jorge Gonzalez, president of Kalamazoo College, to its board of trustees.

North Dakota

The Minot Community Endowment Fund has announced grants totaling $64,000 to fifteen organizations. The largest grant, more than $23,000, was awarded to the Roosevelt Park Zoo. Other recipients include the Taube Museum, Second Story, the Children’s Advocacy Center, and the Minot Commission on Aging.

Ohio

The Cleveland Foundation has announced the formation of a coalition that includes LinkedIn, BioEnterprise, the City of Cleveland, Cleveland State University, and Cuyahoga County that will provide data, analysis, and market research on software development, data science, data analysis, and other computer science positions in the health IT field in Northeast Ohio. Funded in part by the Cleveland Foundation, the work is designed to help inform public policy, educational curricula, community programming, and other talent alignment strategies within the region’s health IT sector.

The Columbus Foundation has announced the appointment of Amy Stearns Acton and Matthew Martin as officers in its community research and grants management department. Acton has served as an assistant professor at Ohio State University, while Martin comes to the foundation from the Kirwan Institute for Race and Ethnicity at Ohio State.

Pennsylvania

The Pittsburgh Foundation has announced that the Charles E. Kaufman Foundation, a supporting organization of the foundation, has awarded eight grants totaling $1.8 million in support of research at Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania State University, Swarthmore College, and the University of Pennsylvania. New Investigator grants awarded by the foundation will provide $150,000 over two years to four researchers, while New Initiative Research grants of $300,000 over two years will be awarded to four established scientists or teams.

WVIA, a Pittston-based PBS affiliate, has announced a $5,000 grant from the Scranton Area Community Foundation in support of the PBS Kids in the Classroom program at Bancroft Elementary School. Through the program, second-graders at the school watched an episode of Arthur that focused on basic math concepts and staying within a budget. Working in groups of four, students then were given a total of $30 in play money to plan a party like the one Arthur held in the related episode.

Vermont

The Vermont Community Foundation in Middlebury has announced grants totaling $235,550 to seventeen organizations. Awarded through the Innovations and Collaborations program, the grants ranged from $10,000 to $20,000. New projects receiving grants include a program to provide parenting skills and other support to young parents in recovery for substance abuse and a program to bring financial services to low- and mid-income workers. Eight additional projects received continuing support grants, including a garden-based activities program for veterans and a peer-mentoring program for residents of the state with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
