Job Summary

Reporting to the Senior Program Officer, the Immigration Program Officer is responsible for leading Silicon Valley Community Foundation’s (SVCF) strategic grantmaking focused on ensuring the safety and security of immigrants as well as opportunities for their upward economic mobility. This position plays a key role in advancing the institution’s commitment to visionary leadership and innovative grantmaking to address the region’s most challenging problems.

Responsibilities

Design and execute grantmaking strategy focused on the immigration field, including current issues, key resource people, organizations and networks, and a clear understanding of how they align with the community foundation’s strategic interests.Solicit, analyze and process funding proposals – determine eligibility and potential for success, conduct background research and site visits, prepare written and verbal summaries for senior leadership and board members.Assist with review of proposals, due diligence and grant recommendations for other grantmaking strategies and special grantmaking opportunities as needed.Assess impact and continuously learn from/improve work through third-party evaluation, grantee learning cohorts and expert advisors.Actively seek opportunities to amplify the impact of our grantmaking through research, convenings and special projects.Leverage discretionary grantmaking resources by activating other co-investors (individual, corporate, government or philanthropic) to support grantmaking work.Attend and participate in appropriate joint efforts and affinity group meetings, conferences, events, networks of foundations and community partners to establish significant positioning in the immigration field.Work with staff across departments to accomplish the Community Impact Division’s goals and work across divisions to accomplish SVCF’s priorities, goals and mission.Remain informed on legal, accounting, investment and technology issues as they relate to charitable giving and grantmaking regulations and best practices.Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree. Master’s degree (Human Services, Public Policy or Administration, Law or other appropriate discipline) is strongly preferred or equivalent experience in the field.
  • At least eight to ten years of experience working in a prominent role in the nonprofit and/or public sector.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills as well as keen analytical skills.
  • Substantive knowledge of immigration and of the nonprofit sector.
  • Experience as a grantmaker in brokering resources with other funders or local government and knowledge of best grantmaking practices.
  • Knowledge of and experience in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties and willingness to travel throughout the two counties.
  • Comfort in a fast paced, rapidly shifting and evolving workplace.
  • Proven track record of exceeding goals and objectives.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with an ability to work with diverse people and groups in multicultural environments.
  • Ability to approach situations and challenges with a sense of humor.
