The Creative Industries in the United States

The creative industries — which include nonprofit entities such as museums, symphonies, and theaters; for-profit businesses such as motion picture and design companies; and architecture firms — employ 3.48 million people across the United States, a report from Americans for the Arts finds. According to the national summary of the 2017 edition of the Creative Industries: Business & Employment in the Arts (2 pages, PDF) series, there are 673,656 arts-related businesses nationwide, the equivalent of 4 percent of all U.S. businesses, and those enterprises employ 2 percent of all U.S. employees. The report further breaks down that number as follows: 117,140 performing arts organizations and performers; 17,858 museums and collections; and 19,392 arts schools and services such as arts councils and agents. Individual reports for all fifty states and the District of Columbia, congressional and state legislative districts, counties, and the hundred most populous cities in the U.S. can be downloaded separately.
